Poverty – The 99 Percenters

And it will only get worse. Global capitalism has never had it better. That means the rest of us struggle to make ends meet. It might be slightly worse in the UK, but America has its worsening food insecurity crisis. It’s worldwide. The 1 percent response is: let them eat cake:

Demand is now so high that staff have had to reassess the services they offer. Earlier this month, guests were told that a cooked breakfast would no longer be provided – costs and numbers have made it impractical – and recently an ambulance had to be called because a woman hit her head as people rushed forward to get in.

…It comes after the Observer revealed in February that more people than ever are depending on food banks in Britain – including pensioners, NHS staff and teachers.

There was a protest march in Washington on Saturday. You would think it never happened given the complete lack of media coverage. That is not unusual. The rights of working people and the poor aren’t of concern to a corporate media that put profit above all things. Poverty is an inconvenient fact for the powerful in America. It makes them uncomfortable:

In 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. organized low-income Americans of different backgrounds in a march on Washington known as the “Poor People’s Campaign.”
Over 50 years later, thousands of protesters gathered Saturday to deliver that same message at the Poor People’s and Low-Wage Workers’ Assembly and Moral March on Washington and to the Polls.
The rally urged low-income voters to participate in the upcoming midterm elections and featured religious organizations, pro-democracy groups, labor unions and climate activists from across the country.
“As long as there are 140 million poor and low-income people in this country, and we know it doesn’t have to be this way, we won’t be silent anymore,” said the Rev. William Barber, co-chair of the Poor People’s Campaign.
